Cherry Ames is Back!

Springer Publishing Company was founded by Bernhard Springer, the Berlin-born great-grandson of the founder of Springer-Verlag, Julius Springer, in 1950, in New York City. His first publications included Livestock Health Encyclopedia by Dr. R. Seiden; his first book for nurses was 1952's Handbook of Cardiology for Nurses. Over the years, Springer Publishing Company grew at a healthy pace, often pioneering new ideas in nursing, psychology (including psychotherapy), and gerontology, plus adding titles in social work, rehabilitation, and public health.

Initially, ReadHowYouWant is partnering with Springer on their re-issued, 20 volume, Cherry Ames series. Librarians may categorize this as a young adult series, but Springer has enjoyed sales from working and retired nurses, plus boomer and post-boomer women pleased to reread beloved adventure stories from their youth.

Cherry Ames is back, just as you remember her!

Springer Publishing Company is proud to present the re-release of the Cherry Ames nursing series! The books are just as you remember them, retaining the same look, feel, and sense of adventure and patriotism as when they were first published. With fully illustrated color covers, these books will transport you back to the days when you were reading about this spunky young nurse. They will also make delightful reading for a new generation of younger readers, transporting them back to a more innocent time when an independent young woman, devoted to helping people--yet also adventuresome, resourceful, and courageous--balanced helping others with getting involved in breathtaking mystery and adventure. Series editor and registered nurse Harriet Forman was inspired by, and remains, a devoted fan of Cherry Ames: “…I was going to follow in her footsteps and become a nurse-—nothing else would do.”

About the Author: The creator of the Cherry Ames series, Helen Wells, was a social worker turned full-time writer, and, like her most famous heroine, an Illinois native who loved New York City. Helen Wells died in New York City on February 10, 1986, and is buried in Danville, Illinois. Harriet Schulman Forman, RN, EdD, formerly in executive leadership and editorial positions with Nursing Spectrum, was instrumental in securing the rights for the Helen Wells editions of Cherry Ames, has written the foreword for this re-issued series, and continues to play an integral part in getting the voice of Cherry Ames heard by a new generation.

I discovered your blog via NetworkedBlogs on Facebook. I'm an ASCLA member working in library services for people with disabilities, so your ALA presentation post caught my eye, but I was delighted to discover this news about the Cherry Ames series. I read my first Cherry Ames book when my mom brought it home from a garage sale- she read them when they were published; I'm a thirty-something- and I am thrilled to see that they are being re-released in a more accessible format. I look forward to following your blog.
