U.K. Titles Set to Launch

RHYW is delighted to report the start of U.K. operations with a contract signed with Lightning Source this week, and the first U.K. publishers coming on board. Andre Deutsch, Watkins Publishing, and Connections are the first publishers to have signed up to RHYW's large print program, and titles will be available online shortly. We have many ongoing discussions and expect the list to expand rapidly over the next months. Congrats to That Deadman Dance!

The Miles Franklin Literary Award was established in 1954, and celebrates Australian character and creativity. It is awarded for the novel of the year.The 2011 award winner is That Deadman Dance by Kim Scott (Pan Macmillan Australia). That Deadman Dance also won the East Asia and Pacific region's best book category of this year's Commonwealth Writers' Prize. Australian comedian Anh Do's The Happiest Refugee (Allen & Unwin) is theOverall Winner of the Indie Book of the Year Award 2011! The book also won in the Nonfiction category, and is the first nonfiction title to take the Overall Award. The awards were presented at the Leading Edge Books Conference in front of a large group of Australian Independent booksellers.

Publishers Weekly Features Large Print Books, and RHYW!

"Large as Life: Large Print Publishing in 2011," appeared in the April 4 issue of Publishers Weekly. Numerous large print publishers and librarians are interviewed, and the article examines the effect of ebooks on large print sales, as well as the use of large print in libraries. New Jersey State Library Talking Book & Braille Center Librarian Elizabeth Burns states, "Large print is very popular with children and teens who have low vision or dyslexia...It can be harder to find at local public libraries than adult large print, because many people think large print is for older folks...not realizing that children and teens need it, also." Librarian Sandy Tharp Interviewed, Visit RHYW at ALA!
The library of the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma recently received a donation of 20 titles in 16pt large print from ReadHowYouWant. Librarian Sandy Tharp heard about RHYW's Library Donation Program at ALA and thought that her library would be a perfect candidate. Sandy and her library participate in the tribe's Community Outreach program which delivers large print or audio books, and daily meals to more than 20 homebound elders. "This gift will touch many sweet people," praises Sandy. RHYW was pleased to make this personal donation, and is looking for other libraries and donors to participate in the Library Donation Program. Large print and accessible formats publisher ReadHowYouWant is also announcing its Library Donation Program. The goal of the program is to donate large print books to libraries that need to expand their collections, but do not have budgets for more books in large print. Bookseller + Publisher's October 27th issue announced RHYW's recent moveinto the New Zealand market, and a number of partnerships with New Zealand and Australian publishers. "ReadHowYouWant converts and republishes books in larger print sizes for visually impaired people who are unable to read books in standard print sizes...The Australian operation also converts and republishes books in Braille, audiobook and ebook formats."

Michael Covington, Information and Education Director of the ECPA, wrote a blog post for Brandilyn Collins's Seatbelt Suspense Forensics & Faith blog. "As there is no revenue stream for publishers (or royalties for authors) generated by accessible-content services such as Bookshare, most publishers will only occasionally license their content for large-print distribution (meaning 16-poing font) with companies such as Thorndike Press. Unfortunately, for many people affected by reading disabilities, a barely-larger font size doesn't solve the problem. Keep in mind that while Bookshare and NLS provide digitally produced audio files, not everyone has the equipment necessary to consume this media...RHYW has worked through all of these issues to provide a print-on-demand solution that allows the reader to pick the style of book they want…This model allows for additional revenue which is then shared with the publishers." The WIPO SCCR 19 meeting held in Geneva, December 14 to 18, just ended with the surprise announcement that the USA has changed its position from being completely opposed to the proposed WIPO Treaty for Improved Access for Blind, Visually Impaired and other Reading Disabled Persons to being completely in favor of it. This is a huge step forward toward copyright exemption for the specialized editions of works that reading impaired and visually impaired persons need to gain access to published books and other materials. The proposed treaty would greatly reduce or eliminate cross-border movement of such versions.

On another note, George Kerscher, long-time advocate for accessible editions and assistive technology, has been elected President of the International Digital Publishing Forum. The IDPF is the organization of publisher and other interested professionals who work with ebooks. Kerscher was one of the founders of the IDPF and is also Chair of the EPUB standards maintenance Working Group and Secretary General of the DAISY Consortium.

Publishing Innovator ReadHowYouWant Bridges Kindle Gap

for Blind and Visually Impaired Readers

Sydney, Australia, November 23, 2009—Amidst complaints of Amazon’s Kindle inaccessibility for blind readers, ReadHowYouWant, a new technology publishing company from Australia, is leading the way in accessible publishing by using proprietary XML conversion software to repurpose books into a number of formats to meet the varying needs of readers who are blind, visually impaired, or have print or learning disabilities.

Now readers can choose between as many as ten different formats before they buy a book at www.readhowyouwant.com, including electronic braille, synthesized audio MP3; optimized, large print, 24 point bold EasyReadÔ print-on-demand books, and DAISY—a talking book format that produces audio along with the written text. DAISY books play on DAISY players, which are either standalone units or computer applications. DAISY is ideal for vision-impaired and blind readers, dyslexic readers, and for readers who are unable to hold a conventional book or turn pages. Testing is also being conducted on several specialized formats for readers with dyslexia and eye-tracking issues.
